This page deals with two kinds of kilts; the Classic Cut, and the Grizzly Cut. Both use four yards of Poly/Viscose and have a fringed edge along the bottom hemline. (8 yard kilts are Classic Cut only.) I designed Bear Kilts to be comfortable and lightweight. Even the inside apron's hidden edge is fringed because it makes it lighter and comfier than a folded hem. Also, a folded hem can be visible through the kilt. The waistband is tapered from the hip to the waist and fits snugly to your measurements with velcro fastening. Velcro also allows a couple of inches leeway for your growth or shrinkage. (Big meals, dieting, etc.) I put three belt loops on the kilt. Belt loops on the front apron bunch up the fabric and I don't put them on Bear Kilts.

The Classic Cut is much like a traditional kilt and is fitted more comfortably, like pants. Wear the Classic Cut to work, a party, or the beach. If you work in an office, choose the Classic Cut.

The Grizzly Cut has smaller front flaps (appx 14") but the waistband is the same as the Classic Cut. The four front pleat edges are frayed to give it a shaggy, rebellious look that matches the bottom hemline's fringed, selvedged edge. There are a few more pleats than the Classic Cut because the pleats come further around the front. The Grizzly Cut is an extremely lightweight and comfortable kilt. It is perfect for hikers, highland games athletes, mountain bikers, golfers, celtic musicians, or hot summer days. If ther's a biker jacket in your closet, choose the Grizzly Cut, though more and more, guys are choosing the grizzly cut for normal wear.

Both cuts are perfect for "steppin' out for a pint" at your local pub. (In an emergency, wear pants to the pub but 'dinna blame me if the lassies dinna gee ya a look!') They also makes great portable change rooms.

4 Yard Kilt vs 8 Yard Kilt

You can purchase a Bear Kilt made with either 4 yards of fabric (left photo) or 8 yards. (Right photo)
A 4 yard kilt is light. It's perfect for summer days, hiking, popping down to the pub for a pint, or tossing in your pannier for a bike trip. Highland games athletes preferring a lighter kilt will go with a 4 yard kilt. This is the kilt for knocking around in. Some of our customers have been married in a 4 yard Bear Kilt. The low cost allows all the guys in the wedding party a chance to take something home from the wedding.
Available in Grizzly Cut, or Classic Cut.
An 8 yard kilt is for everything a 4 yard kilt is for, and so much more. The pleating is much like a traditional, 8 yard wool kilt. The difference is in the fabric and the cut.
Poly/viscose is not hot or itchy like wool and can be machine washed and dried. All 8 yard poly/viscose Bear Kilts have their pleats stitched inside and out to keep the knife edge perfect. (Unstitched is available on request.) Highland games athletes preferring a traditional look will go with an 8 yard kilt.
Another difference is the stitching. A traditional, 8 yard wool kilt has open pleats only up to the hips. Bear Kilts 8 yard kilts have open pleats all the way up to the waistband. (A quick spin sends those pleats way up! A cool breeze gets up there, too.) If you're going to get married in an 8 yard kilt, better check with the bride, first. She might not take kindly to you taking all the attention away from her gown! (That's only half a joke. There have been comments of the kilted groom outshining the bride at many weddings.)
Available in Classic Cut only.
No matter what kilt you wear, you'll find that wearing a kilt is about having fun and feeling free, the two most important reasons to do anything. People seem comfortable with men in kilts. Friendly strangers often stop me on the street to ask about my kilt, or honk from their cars and wave. They know that the kind of guy that wears a kilt is self confident enough to stop and talk to strangers or to wave back. Simply wearing a kilt is an overt act of self confidence.

More and more men are wearing the kilt. This is not a short-lived fad, or a temporary trend. It is a change in the way men dress in their daily lives. Bear Kilts are garments, not costumes. There are all kinds of "trouser tyranny" or "fashion freedom" groups. I applaud their efforts in getting men to think outside the trouser.

I'm not starting a fashion revolution. I have very little interest in the fashion business. A kilt is the most comfortable male garment, so I wear a kilt. I'm not fighting anyone for the right to wear a kilt. I don't argue for the freedom to do or wear anything. I'm already free to wear and do what I choose. So are you.
